I love the way Irving lays out a tale. Expertly paced, so that even the rabbit trails are fun to travel. The thing that bothers me about this one is the amorality in regards to sex - which is the subject of much of this novel. There rarely seems to be emotional or spiritual context to sex, but it's portrayed as a physical and primal thing that is taken for granted by all the characters.

That being said, there is a lot to love here. As Garp ages and matures, I love watching how his perspectives change and his loyalties.

Man, I had a love-hate-love relationship with this book, but in the end, I really liked it.

i liked the style of writing and story, though it definitely reminded me too much of ‘the last chairlift’. also i found the explicit description of violence and rape quite disturbing. would definitely not reread
