And this never changes. She is only defined by her trauma. Why does her mom supposedly say no to bio dad but not the abuser? We don’t know. Why is he evil? We don’t know. Why does she blame herself and obsess over the idea of being perfect? I don’t know, all this book told me over and over is that she had trauma, okay. Trauma! And like, again, ghosts being you before trauma? Great idea.Graphic: Sexual content, Abandonment, Fire/Fire injury, and Grief

there's a scene in the book where the main protag listens in on a couple having sex then masturbates to it this isn't exactly a tw warning for anything specific but the main protag was... weirdly possessive of a child in the story and not in a 'I see you as my kid and want to protect you way'karapillar's review against another edition

If you want a book about trauma and recovery and saving yourself while/by saving others and messily learning to become a human again through unconditional love from a found family you're creating this is the book for you. Also with the addition of literal ghosts as a metaphor for your past haunting you.

Mila has aged out of the foster system, so she goes to a rural farm where she teaches younger foster kids school, and where they eat a lot of soup and ghosts dance in the fields and manifest their trauma.
It is not a terrifying books, but it is one that discusses ptsd and using haunting as a way of showing flashbacks. It was a good book that kept me invested and wanting to know more.
