So, I kept pondering and pondering why this book wasn’t quite working for me, as I feel like the idea was good, and I liked the MC well enough. Then I realized it’s because all the characters are flat.
Spoiler And this never changes. She is only defined by her trauma. Why does her mom supposedly say no to bio dad but not the abuser? We don’t know. Why is he evil? We don’t know. Why does she blame herself and obsess over the idea of being perfect? I don’t know, all this book told me over and over is that she had trauma, okay. Trauma! And like, again, ghosts being you before trauma? Great idea.
And this book made me emotional. But it could’ve been more.

I honestly don’t know how to talk about this book. It’s such an amazing representation of trauma and guilt and all the things we fear and repress. The healing that happens in this book and that i got from reading it was just perfect and the way the author writes the relationship between the characters is so beautiful and heartwarming. The ending was a little anticlimactic in my opinion but it was still amazing and still a 5 star read.

This book was a fast read with beautiful language and a sprinkle of magical realism (my favorite). The story itself is quite sad, but has its moments of fun and beauty.

i can always count on nina lacour for sad gay girlies representation!!!! love how it talked about how affirming it is to have a found family, but also how dangerous it is to have to rely on other people for certain things. in the end, our personal growth is mostly really up to ourselves. the writing was so beautiful, and the narrator read it all so beautifully.
