It appears I'm not a big fan of all things noir, including (or specifically) science fiction. I wasn't particularly fond of Frank Miller's Sinc City either. Added to that, the very outdated (predicted) technology (see also: 12 Monkeys, The Matrix), which might come back in fashion in another fifty years or so. So it's me, not you.

Halfway through this novel, I realized that there are 2 thematic trajectories the story could explore upon; it could either be a paranoid existential thriller where the identity of the main character and everyone around him comes into question à la PKD's own A Scanner Darkly, or it could be a straightforward noir that sometimes raises question about the nature of that identity itself. It ended up being more about the latter, which still makes it a very compelling read, but had it been more about the former I have a feeling this could be a legitimate sci-fi classic that transcends its own film adaptation.
