The first half was four stars then the last half was one-two stars. It probably could have been about 150 pages shorter to be fully enjoyable.

I had a blast with this book. It's witty, fun, readable, and all about books. What's not to like? He and I have different taste it seems, but somebody's got to read all the books I pass over on the shelf, so that's probably a good thing. I forgive him for what he implied about Eat Pray Love. You could tell a little where old articles of his had been tied together but that did not impact my enjoyment at all. I appreciated his attention to French literature, especially Georges Simenon.

Beautifully written memoir about Joe Queenan's life as a reader. The story he tells at the end of the book, about a love affair, is one of the finest passages I've read in any book this year. I also enjoyed his descriptions of how he organizes his book collection, his many bizarre reading plans, and why he hates ebooks.

I loved this book so much. I am going to miss reading this book. I could relate to so many things the author has mentioned. I particularly loved the part about using books to escape reality. The only thing I disagree on is his opinion about ebooks. And science fiction. Also libraries.
I read this on a kindle.

occasionally, you'll catch queenan trying way too hard to be cute while snarking, but otherwise, this book is warm and fun.

The guy is a real condescending dick about other readers but I'd be lying if I said he didn't win me over. I'm sorry he has such a vendetta against e-readers, libraries, genre fiction, and Middlemarch (four things I like very much), but most bibliophiles seem to have some sort of bizarre vendetta against some aspect of reading or readers. I won't share mine because like with most bibliophiles my vendetta makes me sound petty or crazy, which is not anything a lover of Middlemarch could possibly be. (I have a vendetta against rereading. Queenan might actually finish some of those books he wants to finish before he dies if he'll just stop rereading Persuasion.)

In the authors honor and in his tradition I am leaving this one unread. This book was fascinatingly contradictory of it self and extremely negative. Almost dare I say, hilariously negative. I was enthralled by his unpolished crude and uppity view on literature libraries and the act of lending in general. Although he at one time was greatly followed and wrote for reputable newspapers and magazines he is utter dribble. You shall be one of the few unfinished books in my fast reading reputar

I liked a lot of his points, and I definitely loved his quotes on books and how much importance they have. However, most of his argument felt very snobby to me and it sort of turned me off of the whole book.
