A beautiful and sympathetic exploration of Vincent Van Gogh, but it plays too much into the you-have-to-be-crazy-to-be-an-artist trope that is, in the end, untrue and unhelpful.

This book, along with The Agony & the Ecstasy, changed how I think & look at art by these masters. I wish Irving Stone had written more - although I’m looking forward to reading his book about Mary Todd Lincoln.

The author says that all but a few episodes in the book are purely non-fiction documented event to include most of the dialogue--truly fascinating. Heart breaking and endearing! Definitely worth the read.
