I wanted to really love this book. I’ve heard great things about this author from the book club community. The author has other books that I hope I will love more. I enjoyed the concept of this book and agree with what the author has put forward. However, I found that it was too research-y for my tastes at times. I loved reading the parts when the author was writing about his experiences. I felt heartwarming when the author shared readers' experiences of the practices working for them. I want to improve my health and will put into practice some of what the author has put forward in this book. Unfortunately, I don’t see myself reading this one again, but I will read some of his other books, as I love his personal writing.

This is an interesting and well evidenced book about the connections between the mind and body. The book offers a good mix of evidence, examples and a practical guide to using the visualisation approaches. I found the writing at times, too conversational with too many exclamation marks. It was also repetitive. However, I definitely learnt more about the way your mind and influence your body.

A book about how positive energy can actually save your life, a manifesto sustaining the idea that most of the “help” out there is just placebo but guess what? Placebo works.

You know what else works?

Positive energy = positive thoughts.

Please experience them, live through them and you will find peace.

10/10 will recommend.

The book was a real mixed bag for me!

The first half of the book was wonderful; it talked about the science behind placeboes and visualisation and the physical changes that are made in the brain as a consequence. I found it really interesting, especially as I was one of those people that though meditation was a load of rubbish until recently reading Ruby Wax’s A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled. The book pulled on many studies and showed that the mind does have real effect on the body.

The second half of the book moves more in to testimonials and this is where I feel like it lost me. I think I just enjoyed the more non-subjective science based explanations compared to Cynthia making her cancer go away by imagining sparkles.

Overall, it was a really good book but I’d say it’s only worth reading the first half if you’re more of a science/ facts person.
