It wasn't terrible by any means. Really, I think my complaints are those of a nit-picky Sherlockian. Holmes was a wee bit too accessible for my tastes.

Overall, I found the premise of the novel incredibly intriguing. How could one not be lured by the promise of a mystery surrounding hybrid creatures? The book was, overall a fun and exciting read. If it were a movie it would easily fall into the vein of summer blockbuster thriller.
I encourage other Holmes fans to give it a try. I promise you'll have a fun time if nothing else!

I really enjoyed The Breath of God, so I was curious to read more Sherlock Holmes adventures by Guy Adams. The Army of Dr. Moreau started out so strong - the humor in the beginning was spot on and hilarious. I had such a great time reading this book for about the first hundred pages but then the story just lost itself and there were fewer and fewer exciting moments. The ending was satisfying enough, but, as sad as that makes me, I still cannot give this more than

2.5 stars.

Fun read. I really like the style of this series, though I wish the books were longer.

I was a little less enamoured with this one than I was with Adams' last Sherlock novel, The Breath of God.
Though I think the premise again interesting and Adams openly admits that he's borrowing characters and concepts from elsewhere, I couldn't quite get into this and I did again find Sherlock to be a little less involved than I'd have liked.
One thing is for sure and that is that Adams has indeed had fun with these and that shows, and is rather nice to see.

Having only read one other Holmes novel I have little basis for comparison, but I found this less exciting than The Stuff Of Nightmares, and certainly it lacks the intelligent mystery I would expect in a tale involving the world's most renowned consulting detective. But the author Guy Adams admits in the afterword that it is just some pulp fun, with some satisfying nods to characters of other works.

In the last part of the book, forty-odd pages, the narrative switches to the other characters of the story. It is at this point that the pace goes up a gear, naturally for the final chapters, and also becomes somewhat more fun. I especially enjoyed the sections told by Holmes himself, and the hunter, Challenger.

I would have much preferred the entire novel to be told from switching narratives, but with that said I still enjoyed it and look forward to reading other tales of Sherlock Holmes written by Adams, especially The Breath Of God.
