Oooo…I really loved reading this book! I’ve been a big CJ Tudor fan since I first read The Chalk Man; she never disappoints with her gut-gripping opening chapters and the way she creates multi-layered stories that continue to rework and reshape like a Rubik’s cube. And yes, I thought I was so brilliant in guessing at one major plot point, only to be surprised by other twists that lay hidden until the exact right moment…much like a haunted house attraction makes you look one way while a terrific scare frightens you from another.

This novel draws you in quickly and never let’s you go - each chapter ending in a cliffhanger moment. Add in elements of religious sacrifice, missing girls, deeply-rooted traditions, and yes, even hints at exorcism, all set in the backdrop of a rural town that celebrates its history of martyrs with twig dolls and has deep-set secrets of ghosts and strange deaths…it’s not difficult to keep turning the pages late into the night!

Good mystery thriller, well paced with interesting character developments. Overall I’d recommend this to anyone interested in a Stephen King-esque style story, trimmed down.

After getting over the disappointment that this isn’t about the literal title character - the most interesting thing about the book - it was enjoyable enough to keep the pages flying.
