Pretty depressing but also uplighting. Reads younger than Watson’s other books so I don’t know if it was supposed to be for middle grade but I found it in Y/A.

I might lower my rating to 3.5 but it will stay as a 4 for now. I really really really liked this! I read it in one sitting! I really loved Serenity and Maria. I really appreciated that it had a mc with an abusive parent since it is a middle-grade. The reason I didn't rate this a 5 star is because it had a lot of conversations about God and there is nothing wrong with that but it did lower my overall enjoyment of the book. There were a few moments that I almost teared up (but I didn't, HA). Also, can we just talk about the cover for a sec, like GORGEOUS! All in all, I really enjoyed this book and will continue to read more of Renee Watson's books!
