I would like to start off by saying that this was a very easy read, and I thought it was pretty funny throughout! I read her previous book, and I wanted to see what the second one offered, and I feel like this author is consistent in that readers will get a light, trope-y, exciting story.

Now, consistency is great until it fractures and blooms into being redundant- basically, this was the love hypothesis. It just was. I never read any of the author’s other work, but I understand through other reviews that the author is very fond of two main character archetypes.

This is evident in Bee’s “quirky” low-maintenance beauty, her faultless wit, and her assumed status of best in her field. I wish she made more mistakes! All of her faults are extremely palatable, and I think giving her opportunity for personal growth would benefit the story.

Levi is the same giant (truly we cannot escape his size, like I truly understand that he is a big boi), moody, yet completely enraptured love interest for the main woman. Also he is perfect in every way except for one fault that was actually just a huge misunderstanding. Also he was just so similar to Bee (vegan, cats, academia, twitter) and I really wanted there to be some differences.

The love story is also structured the same- the main guy has been in love with the woman for forever, and she has no idea. Also, the conflict is the same one structured around her trying to achieve an academic goal and a man who is Levi’s friend is getting in the way of that. Like when the villain was revealed, I was like “It’’s the main guy’s friend?! Again?! Who secretly hates him?!! And harasses the main character?!”

I do think that the story would benefit from creating a new conflict, and two new characters who don’t have the same romantic structure- like what if they actually hated each other? What if there was no misunderstanding, and we instead worked through that? Or, what if they don’t have a past and they’re just meeting for the first time?

Overall, rom coms are expected to be trope-y and light, and so I really think this book fulfills that expectation! I wasn’t surprised by the choices, I just think that writers can take already established tropes and make them their own! And they can avoid writing the same story to stretch and showcase their ability to write different characters.

I really did laugh a lot, and I did enjoy the feminist dialogue throughout! I also liked that Bee had Marie Curie throughout the book, it was very cute and a good common thread to pull from throughout the whole story. I do think the feminism could be more intersectional by having a more diverse set of characters.

Overall, it’s a quick read! I loved the side characters a lot, and had a lot of fun :)

I think I liked it better than love hypothesis but similar level of silliness and froth

I have mixed thoughts. But, to sum it up quickly:  I thought it was predictable, especially after reading The Love Hypothesis.   And, simultaneously,  I thought it was so romantic and sweet!!!!!
Aaaaahhhhh.....
