Star Rating: N/A
I put five stars for the sake of GoodReads, the publisher, and the author. But for me, this was not a story to be rated, but to be felt. On the eve of my own parent's Deathiversary, it was a comfort to sit with this story. My story has differences: I was several years younger than Tyler, I lost my father instead of mother, and it was a sudden implosion instead of drawn-out spiral. But when sitting in time-out with my own grief this year, it was wonderful to read someone else's journey through it. Sometimes it's just nice to spend time with others in the Dead Parent At A Young Age club.

This graphic novel was almost definitely one of my favorites we have encountered this semester. It was emotional but somehow didn’t take itself too seriously and the author was always willing to inject some humor into a situation that most wouldn’t find humor in. One of my favorite parts is the whimsical art style and way of writing and how that clashes with the situation itself and the reality. The author is talking about her experience before and after her mother’s death while also bringing a lightness through her art and phrasing.

How do I review a memoir about losing one's mum? Maybe younger me would've appreciated this more. The comic style is cute and wonderful — I personally would've preferred a heavier, gut-wrenching read on grief. Then again, this book is for YA readers, whom I think is perfect for.

I do not have a dead mum I just like reading other peoples life experiences and I found this to be pretty good. It did end up taking me a while to get through but I enjoyed it
