Last Shot: A Han and Lando Novel by Daniel José Older

Equal parts prequel and sequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story, Last Shot tells an entirely standalone Han and Lando adventure that stretches across fifteen years. Primarily set three years after Return of the Jedi, we see Han and Lando and their crew searching for a powerful device that could potentially reshape the galaxy. Once again the novels are providing almost essential character development for the era of the sequel trilogy. For Han, we see his struggles as a husband and as a father (which is particularly tragic knowing how that ends). For Lando, a struggle of identity and a possible romantic relationship. We also see the early days of the New Republic and Leia’s efforts to maintain peace and order. Can I just say it was so nice to finally get more info on what Lando is up to after the OT? He deserves to be given more stories in this era.

With regards to the upcoming Solo film, we were given tantalizing glimpses at what will happen with a few indirect references that I’m sure will make much more sense a month from now. I’m pretty sure Han’s flashback scenes start off almost immediately after the events of the movie which I loved.

Definitely worth a read as a great standalone story while also serving as a good primer for how Han, Lando, and Chewbacca will act in Solo. Clearly, they will be different characters than the ones we are currently familiar with, which is good to know. Bring on the movie!

Last Shot follows Lando and Han as they are pulled back to action by troubles from their less-than-honest past. Switching back and forth both between the two of them and their past selves, this book really gets to shine when developing the characters.

Scoundrels aren't meant to mature, so what happens when they do? While Han struggles with fatherhood and a government position, Lando can't admit to himself that he wants to settle down. The internal conflict in both cases is spectacular, Lando specifically being more tridimensional than ever

The plot is quite whatever. The villain is a non-issue and completely uncharismatic. I really didn't feel stakes rising at any point. The back and forth between now and then also hurt the pacing, and didn't add anything to the story other than interrupting the flow. (I have a feeling they were added solely for the cameos).

I understand that it's a Star Wars novel, and for Lando and Han fans on top of that, but I believe this would've been an extremely strong addition to the saga if it had trusted itself to be an adult narrative about maturing and left the action more to the backdrop.

(my favorite scenes 100% were the ones with baby Ben. He could've been so much if not for all the muder :'()

Got good right around the 90% mark.
In retrospect, this is exactly the kind of Star Wars book I should have loved - Han and Lando, a terrifying threat to the Galaxy, but it was so slow and so scattered and I just never started to actually enjoy it. The ending was a 4 star ending though.
Also why was Beex's reaction to Ben Solo crying "Oh, I know what this two year old needs - caf!"?

A fair adventure story hampered by a messy dual flashback structure and an disappointing underuse of the main character. All Han does in the story is complain and worry. Still, Lando comes off well and I suspect the L3 bits will have more resonance once the film comes out.

So..... Yeah. This book definitely exists and it is not my favourite Star Wars story. I don't really feel like writing a not necessarily nice review, so I'll just leave it at that. I'm a bit disappointed because I loved DJO's other Star Wars works (specifically THR: Midnight Horizon) but I guess this one wasn't for me!
