Here are some of my review:
Amina and Her Journey:
• I admire her transition from a retired respected pirate to a mother, and back as a nakhuda which I think is very original, and not many authors would feature a woman let alone a mother as a pirate captain.

World-Building and Setting:
• The author and narrator did an amazing job in making the story of the historical and mythical aspects of the Middle East and Indian Ocean immersive and believable.

Narrative Style and Themes:
• The interview framing in this book surely makes it more entertaining, especially in audiobook format.

• I usually read fantasy novels where a woman is the main character, but never a mother. That is an important character foundation to signal that mothers can achieve great things.

• The pacing and plot were exciting in the first 60% of the book, after that, it gets a bit complex with the magic, Jin, and multiple characters.

• I’d recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy and adventure. Overall, I give it a 4/5 stars!

Read it for book club, for which purpose i would recommend as it has backstory and history between characters and an overall current mystery to keep people engaged and the discussion flowing. However, much preferred the author's other book, The City of Brass, the characters are more engaging with a smaller cast and higher stakes, as well as a richer historical context and cultural consequences to untangle.

4.5 stars. Entertaining popcorn-adventure fantasy that was so fun to read. It was refreshing (& subversive) to see a lead who was a middle-aged mother retired from the business of pirating.
Spoiler Magical elements felt like The Mummy. And I loved how the crew was introduced like an Ocean's Eleven heist:
"The gang all back together...we should rob something!"
"We used to joke that of the three of us, I could kill you up close, Tinbu could kill you from another ship, and Dalila could kill you from a different city three days later."
