This story is kind of a spoof on Christmas, Santa Claus, and other childhood lies. Some beings want the Hogfather, Discworld's Santa, dead. This starts a string of events that involve fairies, gnomes, and Susan.

The wit in this writing reminded me a lot of Oscar Wilde. An example is this quote: "I really should talk to him, sir. He's had a near-death experience!" "We all have. It's called 'living'."

I liked Mr. Teatime as the villain. He was scary but fascinating. I liked how Death didn't think like a human.

I think I would have given this 5 stars instead of 4 if I read the series in order (even if a lot of people say it's okay to read the Discworld books as stand-alones). I just felt like I was missing a chunk of infomation. It was still pretty good, though.

Darker than you'd expect, given that it looks like it's going to be all about Discworld Santa. But as usual for Pratchett, it is full of interesting ideas and thoughts, on the nature of belief, on what is really valued in fine dining, on how one can interfere without interfering, on purpose in life.

I love death being santa, I love the wizards doing their wizardy things, I love the crow and the death of rats, I love the assassins, and of course Susan is always amazing. I think this might be a new favourite book

The edition of this book that I read had a weird editing error on page 43. The scene underwater immediately transitions to an unrelated scene in the city without making a new paragraph, or a new section. (ISBN: 9780062276285)

Otherwise an entertaining holiday read!
