This is not at all what I was expecting when I picked this book up. Whether that is a good or bad thing, I can't tell you. What I can say is that the ending was really unsatisfying? I feel like we didn't get any closure. But I did like how the author portrayed grief and depression. This whole book was really a study of grief, and it was well done.

Really good! The reader is pulled into the soul and politics of this family--their pain, their ambitions, their struggles with each other and the world around them. Super sharp and raw commentary on capitalism and identity. The only thing about this that wasn't totally great was that one scene in the bathroom...YOU KNOW the one. Why why WHY???

Otherwise, great.

Themes of family, loss, magic, questions of identity and estrangement, futures that don’t play out as hoped. Are bonds a connection or a trap? A struggling Hawaiian family deals with all of this. Thought-provoking, sad, with a bit of hope at the end.

Excellent. Deep read that pulled at heartstrings and centered itself on Hawaii.
