Always a painful topic, but the story told in first person from the perspectives of a Jew, Fascist, and woman experiencing the same crisis was fascinating.

An important work of WWII historical fiction, that of what happened to the Jews in Italy under Mussolini, especially once he allied with Hitler. The Garden of the Finzi-Continis is the only other book I remember that specifically addresses the round up of the Italian Jewish population. As a group they were firmly entrenched in Italian society and the disbelief they felt as every right was stripped away, culminating in their expulsion, I felt deeply. It is easy to see how this could happen anywhere, even here in the U.S.
This book also succeeds as a love story, both romantic and family love.
The audio narration is wonderful with both a female and male narrator speaking with gorgeous Italian accents.

My favorite author!!! Great historical fiction read - I learned quite a bit about Rome now I can’t wait to go back. I wanted this book to go on and on...... Thank you!

Novel takes place in Italy before and during world war 2. They're three main characters, Elizabetta Marco and Sondro. Elizabetta briefly dates both men but it's very much love with Sondra. Marco and his father are deeply fascist. Sondro is a Jew and Elizabetra comes from a family that is broken. Elizabetta and Marco helps her.. Sandro is rounded up when the Nazis come to occupy Italy. Marco tries to help him but cannot. Then he is able to get Sanondra off the train Sondra was killed. Elizabetta is pregnant with Sondra's child but Mary's Marco at two of them have a very happy life together.

Wow, just wow. I’ve read innumerable historical fiction books on WWII but never one set in Italy. This was a heart-wrenching story of love and family, and I’m now so curious to learn more about the actual events.

3 1/2 stars. The chapter structure was annoying. Each was a different POV but 140+ chapters? The narration by Edoardo Ballerini was excellent; Cassandra Campbell as Elissabetta, not so much.

Excellent book! While I have read numerous historical fiction books about WWII and the Holocaust, I have never read about the impact on Italy. Beautifully written from different perspectives.

I loved this book! Before reading it I did not know of the history of the Jew’s in Italy. Lisa Scottoline has created a perfect balance of factual history and storytelling.
