This is one of the most incredible books I've read in a long time. I devoured all 700+ pages in just a few days. A poignant, funny, heartbreaking, redeeming story about our inner secrets that somehow never came across as too contrived or unbelievable.
The character development was perfectly paced, and despite the variation in decades and stories, it was possible to like each character and respect their perspective. A great read that I literally couldn't put down.
"Sometimes we're so wrapped up in our own stories that we don't see how we are supporting characters in someone else's."

highly recommend the audiobook! it's got a slow start making it hard to break into if reading, and the narrator does a great job with voices for each character.

Stunningly expansive and ruthlessly honest with itself, this books and books like it are the reason why I read.

Read the opening of this novel, and you won't be able to put it down. The bittersweet story of an estranged mother and son, this literary debut is a sweeping epic of the late 20th century with stops in the 40's, 60's, and 80's. Smart, funny, and full of heart, The Nix contains an undercurrent of Norwegian folk mythology that makes it a pleasure to read. Recommended for fans of Donna Tartt and Michael Chabon.
