Book with Canto representation is hard to come by in mainstream NA! I had this on my tbr list for a while so I'm happy that I finally got around to it. The beginning had some pretty heavy handed Cantonese/Chinese allusions and then the ending had more Christian references. The Canto phonetics and the explanations after were okay. The one funny one was about how you can pick a religion any religion (since it was more a philosophy) as long as you had one, it was sort of like soup. I thought it was funny since it's more or less true, especially since I think my family is a mix of Buddhist, Taoist and whatever regional practices my parents believe in.

Mercy Wong is an upbeat spirit with bossy cheeks and a headstrong way of thinking. Her quick thinking and can do attitude (many of her inspirations come from her idol, Mrs. Lowry, a strong business woman) has led her into the elite finishing school for young white girls called St. Claire's. "She had the staying power of a wine stain"!! Ahaha such a funny line

I liked the journey of trying to get into the school and how she tried to do her best to stay in it with the business deal. It was enjoyable after the
Spoilerearthquake
. I enjoyed it differently and a little bit less than the middle half. I really liked Francesca, though she really felt like a plot device character by the end! She went into all the adventures, did the cool things, got into some trouble but got out of it just as fast to tie up the ending.

Spoiler I felt sad when her family died, the filial piety was strong. I'm glad her dad made it out alive! Though they should have stewed us in sadness longer, the reveal felt too quick.
