1. People that Laura talks about in this book exist in large, hidden numbers
2. They could be anyone
This book contains extremely important and helpful information. It is something I think everyone should take a gander at least once in their life - regardless of their gender, sex or orientation. Because this is a reality we all face and interact with, even if it is on very different levels from one person to the next. But it honestly gave me so much anxiety listening to the audio book, that I need to make sure everyone is aware that it is a very difficult read / listen, and it is okay to read it in small doses.

I felt it was a good mix of showing the daily struggles women face just existing but also being empathetic towards the real problems men face. The last few chapters made me want to encourage the people in my life to take a more active role in the lives of the vulnerable people around them.
Graphic: Emotional abuse, Racism, Sexism, Violence, Islamophobia, Mass/school shootings, and Sexual harassment
Moderate: Domestic abuse, Hate crime, Physical abuse, Sexual assault, Sexual violence, Slavery, Suicide, and Toxic relationship

Patriarchy is a disease that doesn’t discriminate… it fucks over not only the marginalised and minority groups but, ultimately, those in power too.
•
It is painfully ironic that most (if not all) arguments against feminism exemplifies exactly why the world needs feminism. One page a man is saying women regularly make false rape accusations and the next page he’s saying that “raping women is a way of regaining control”. In another context, it might be laughable.

While this was unpleasant and shocking and upsetting, I learned a lot about the underbelly of society. Those who uphold misogynistic, violent ideologies, and spout them in the forgiving shadows of the internet’s recesses. But I also learned about those who subscribe to some of these belief systems and are present in public spheres, both in the largest sense (e.g. people in the media, people able to evoke political legislation etc.) and those who are able to influence on a smaller scale, within communities and social circles.

I really recommend this to everyone. There is shit in here that I promise you, you don’t know exists! And you need to know about it! It poses preventative measures, too, so it’s assuring to know that there is a plan of action and people doing the work. We can all do our part to deconstruct what the patriarchy and toxic masculinity has taught us, and stop violence and abuse against women.
