I decided to stop reading bc it was making me feel pessimistic and depressed. Head in sand theory all the way.

The main things I learned are that a lot of these mass shooter guys write in their manifestos how much they hate women and want to kill them and there are lots of online groups cheering them on, there are no consequences for threatening a woman with violence, aaand the looksmaxing redpill incel pipeline is real.

Mixed feelings about this one but I feel it’s more a “me” problem.

I’m quite familiar with inceldom and a handful of the cases Bates uncovers in the book, so some of the stories come at no surprise to me. Nonetheless, her research is in-depth and detailed and this book is a good start for novices. Even now two years on from its release, the issues uncovered are still timely as the online manosphere continues to grow in popularity and exposure.

My main gripe is that there are many parts of the book that just feel like an onslaught of facts and case studies, which at times felt like a chore to plough through. Where the book shines is where Bates is undercover as Alex and feels more investigative.

Admittedly, I took longer than I’d have liked to finish this book, but again, that’s a me problem and the subject matter may be to blame.

I think I would have preferred this as a documentary

People need to read this book. It has given me so much insight into the communities that hate women. It has given me the knowledge to understand the secretive messages and hints they leave for each other. I now have the knowledge to call out men in my life if it seems that they might be dipping their toes into hatred.
