4 stelle!

The storyline was good, but somehow I just didn't feel very invested in the characters. Slow to start and a little predictable, but a quick, entertaining read. Olivia already sounded crazy at the end of Ruined, but now - well, she's just about gone off the deep end. Cas is having his own troubles as the new King of Lera, with his cousin Jovita opposing him at every turn, trying to steal his throne, and quickly realizes that he needs to take a firm stand if he wants anything to go his way. Em, of course, is caught up right in the middle of all this, and is torn between keeping her promise to Cas and supporting Olivia. Aren is a much more prominent character in this book, and I really like the way his character has developed. Avenged was not as intense as Ruined, but definitely a fun adventure with lots of political drama, battles and scheming.

What an excellent continuation of the story. Em is trying to save her sister from herself and not really succeeding. Cas finally coming into his own. I also enjoyed the growth of Aren and Iria.
Can't wait to see how it ends.

I liked this one but not as much as Ruined. However, it was better than the typical book 2 of a trilogy. I continued to adore Cas/Em and can't wait to see how everything comes to an end in the final installment.

I gave this 3 stars because it’s hard to compare this to Defy the Night, which I LOVED. It was still really good and I’m super sad my library doesn’t have the third book, Allied.
