Despite taking a while to finish this book (I kept picking it up and putting it back down for no reason that I was just distracted), I really enjoyed the finale to this trilogy. Some (inevitable) deaths were a little predictable, though it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story. There was a lot of action scattered throughout the pages of this book, with little pockets of hype and drama in between. As a reader, you could really feel
Ana's grief over the loss of her Affinity, so it was interesting watching her reconcile with that loss, especially as she wanted to be rid of it growing up.

The romance between Ana and Ramson also comes to head in this book, though it was a little frustrating with Ana resisting and pushing Ramson away because of the impending doom over our shoulder. It was very "I'll-spare-you-the-hardship-of-loving-me-because-I'm-gonna-die-soon" and all that.

Once again, this book sets up a lot of potential to further expand on the exploration of its universe, despite this being the final book of the trilogy. I just feel like there's so much more that we could see from this series, from the different regions in this world to the magic systems and the various Affinities that we never got to see.

The switching between perspectives, particularly in Part I, made this a page-turner. Yet there were times where the multiple perspectives worked to the book's disadvantage, as it sometimes felt like I was forced to put a situation (that I was already invested in) on pause because I was required to read from someone else's point of view. This was remedied in Part II of the story, though we don't get there until the last quarter of the book.

Overall, I'd like to think we got a satisfactory end to this trilogy, and I honestly felt a little sad once it was over. I'm going to miss this beloved cast of characters!

i’ve kept this series and these characters close to my heart for three years now. i’m not letting them go- i know this is a story i’ll return to time and again, as i already have. i love the beauty and the ugliness, the message, and the fragile hope that amelie wen zhao has gifted us all in this story. i cant wait for what she brings us next. <3
