This book at first was a little tough for me to get through. It felt a little flat for a while and took me a beat to get into a reading rhythm but I still think this is a pretty story. I liked the ending, and how it was written. I did tear up there. I did get pretty ticked off at some of the main character flaws but I think that’s the point of stories like these. I enjoyed this read and would recommend if you want a slower, stable read (not too much of an emotional rollercoaster imo)

This book is not overrated. This is the only retelling of Achilles that focuses on his queerness and it is not overrated. It is a must read and young queer folk are going to feel seen after reading this. Beware however, you will be heartbroken after you finish it.

I’m not going to put this in spoiler tags because in the earlier pages of this book, there is mention of rape. I hate how this author made it seem so normal, and there are no content warnings anywhere in the book. Looks can be insanely deceiving, the cover of this book looks all shiny and new, but I stopped when I’ve already read (a few times) the misogyny written in its content.

It also plainly has child abuse written in the first few pages as well. You can tell the “king” of the protagonist is neglectful toward his own child.

I don’t know why the hell she did this, whether it was “accurate” back then, Miller had the audacity to change things yet she chose to write about rape and to let men have power in all their glory in this book— slavery and pedophilia is also mentioned. I stopped when
SpoilerAchilles’ dad “offered him” a woman, the context here is that a woman would be given to Achilles for sex, disgustingly ‘offered’ by his dad
on page 61.

I’m so fucking disgusted and angry because rape and getting away with with sexual things slyly is written here.

I’m fuming. This is the first time I read in months. I hate this bitch for writing rape like it was nothing. What did you even wish to gain from that? Empathy? I hate you, Madeline Miller. Next time, give a trigger warning.

I think this is the saddest love story i've ever read. Heartbreaking, breathtaking, and beautifully written (also painful bc of how much sadness it has).
