This is the first book I have read by L. Steele and I will definitely read another. This book is a standalone, but is part of a series and I do think I would have a better understanding of the secondary characters if I had read these. Putting that aside though, I did enjoy this book and the level of heat was right on target. At first the characters were not very likeable, Penny had verbal diarrhea and Knight was the most arrogant, nasty bosshole imaginable. At times, I felt he crossed that line between dominant and abusive as I read, but he always seemed to redeem himself. Knight was a broken man, from being captured by the enemy and tortured, losing the rest of his team, he felt that he wasn't worthy or capable of love. Finding himself so drawn to the bubbly sunshine that is Penny, throws Knight for a loop and starts to break down his walls to the point where he begins to see a future with Penny. Despite Penny's seemingly upbeat attitude, she has had a lot of sadness in her life and her attraction to Knight is undeniable, but much as she bends to Knight's will she is a strong woman who knows what she wants and will only allow herself to be pushed so far. Love a good Grumpy/Sunshine story.

OMG!!! I was NOT expecting this book to hit me as hard as it did! I literally could not put it down. I don't want to give any spoilers so I'll just say - I loved the spice. Knight is definitely an alphahole. I was happy to see that Penny was a bigger girl that is comfortable in her skin. I wished that she would stand up for herself with Knight sometimes but at the same time, I understood where she was coming from too. Knight's issues are pretty serious and it bothered me that his friends/family don't make a bigger deal out of it - HOWEVER, he is good at hiding just how traumatic his experiences were... except with Penny. LOVED THIS BOOK and would DEFINITELY read again!

(sighs)
SPOILERS:
Review as I read:
Chapter one: FMC is an idiot. I have no clue how she can recover from the pure idiocy she displays in chapter one. I considered DNFing and would have if I wasn't intrigued by the MMC. I enjoyed his character in previous books of this series so I'm giving this a chance. But, as of chapter one, the FMC is obnoxious, stupid and shallow. The MMC is home after being held captive for six months and she cannot find an ounce of compassion within herself to show him because she's too busy lusting after him.

After chapter four: So, after the FMC was obnoxious to the MMC in chapter one, you are telling me she blames the MMC for not talking to her? Taking no responsibility whatsoever for being completely inappropriate, the FMC acts like she was friendly and the MMC ignored her and was angry with her for no reason. The lack of self-awareness is not cute.

After chapter eight. The FMC takes a job being a submissive at a bdsm club and she's a virgin. That's all.

After chapter nine. What's the deal with the FMC getting mad at the MMC for things that aren't wrong? She's mad at him for immediately getting her home from the club after he learned she was a virgin but how is that wrong? It's not like they are dating or have any established friendship/ relationship at all. This book is so nonsensical so far.

After chapter 11. The FMC continues to say the most inappropriate things and, for some strange reason, has decided the MMC is a jerk. She, in my opinion, has been 10 times the jerk he has been, so far, so this angle is really not working for me.

At 79 percent: FMC says to MMC: "I wish you’d never come back alive."

No excuse for this. None.

Then I found out why she was mad at the MMC and that made this statement of hers even worse. She literally told him she wished he had died OF TORTURE just because he kept a secret from her. I absolutely cannot root for this couple after such a heartless statement.

Yes, there are times the MMC is a jerk in this book but nothing he says or does is close to the FMC telling him she wished he would he died. PLUS, he is her best friend's brother. Not only is it a terrible thing for her to say because she supposedly loves him but what about her best friend?

This book gets one star for that heartless comment from the FMC. There's so much wrong in this book, but the biggest problem is that many of those things make it difficult to buy these characters are in love.
