I wasn’t a fan of the previous book in the series, but I decided to give this one a chance. I’m glad I did. I loved the world building and it was so nice to see my favorite characters again.

This was my favourite from the Modern Faerie Tales. The scheming, the intro to the court of flowers and what kinda 'bitch' their queen was. Kaye swore an oath to Rioben, and he gave her a task . . . find a fairy that can lie? Such an impossible quest, but Roiben was still mysteriously attractive in this plot. In a way, he had to find himself again after all that was lost. Kaye had to make peace with her inner demons - Corny turned psycho, then human, yet he found someone who accepted him.

I loved how Valiant intertwined together with this storyline and how one does not need to know what happened in the second book - it doesn't play a huge role in Ironside.

I loved the plot and the climax which it had built too.

Now the bonus short story . . . Lutie wants to show everyone she is useful - then she goes to Elfhame on a mission. A small insight to the Folk of the Air series.

This one really hits its stride, I think. The main character is much more at home with herself in many ways, and it makes it easier to experience the story from her point of view.

There is a gap between the events of Tithe and the start of this one, and I found that the overall story benefited from that un-explored time for me. I was able to fill in the gaps and it made me much more able to buy into the stakes at play for this conclusion.

Although there were some things I wanted from the ending that, had they been there, would've made me absolutely adore this book, I still came away in their absence having enjoyed this series very much. I definitely like the world Black built here, and I have plans to visit it again through another of her series in the not-so-distant future.

As a final book, it does a good job of concluding what has been set up for it before. It keeps the through-lines of cruelty and intrigue, coupled with a necessary clash between the mortal and the magical world. It toes the line without going too far, and as a result I absolutely ate this book up.
