Very with the current times in terms of the Russian/Ukrainian war and the Wagner forces (though they've been renamed in this book as has the name of the Russian president).

This book deals with some extremely tough topics that we all wish didn't arise during war - including human rights violations, rape, human trafficking, looting and vandalism.

Scott Harvath (the main character) is hated and despised by the Russian president for his past acts (see the other books) against his family and so is often a target of this president's anger and fury this helps to build the suspense and themes of retribution in this book.

I enjoyed the fast paced adventure of this series and enjoyed the chase of the villains to work towards righting the wrongs that were committed.

As is the case with many American spy novels and thrillers the topic is told all from one perspective and there is as always a right side and a wrong side. (Good versus Evil).  This can tend to glorify war and back door statecraft from a nationalistic perspective - that there is a time to commit equally evil acts as retribution for evil acts (An eye for an eye - or one wrong for another wrong).
