In my estimation the most accessible and emotional raw translation of Virgil's work into English. I have used this edition successfully in classrooms half a dozen times. Many students learn to love Virgil under Lombardo's spell.

This story is about a group of Trojan and their adventures after their city was destroyed. The main guy is Aeneas, but you don’t learn much about the others because they often get into big trouble really fast, like their lungs get yanked out on a spear. It’s a long story with lots of action, and sometimes it feels like it’s too long.

The prose translation by W.F. Jackson Knight (the edition I read, an old Penguin) is a little awkward, and frankly I don't care who killed who, so the five-page lists of "and then he killed Coitus and Anthrax, mighty brothers and sons of the aged Phlox, whose golden city rises out of the plain" got a bit tedious. But it is probably the single most important poem ever written, and bits of it are really gripping: all of book four (the story of Dido), for instance, and the final fight between Aeneas and Turnus. Definitely worth it.

State-sponsored story bigging up Augustus Caesar via the initial founder of Rome, Aeneas, who survived the Trojan War. It's better than the Iliad and Book Six directly inspired Dante.
