The narration by none other than Kate Reading and Michael Kramer was fantastic as well and lent these characters an unforgettable voice. The action was fast-paced, much as the rest of the book, but even within the relatively short amount of time this novella had, it delivered solidly when it came to emotional impact and hinted at bigger things when it came to worldbuilding etc in the background just enough to make me curious and eager for more, but not too much that I felt like the author was trying to cram every information available onto the pages.
Needless to say, I already pre-ordered book 2 <3

The characters dynamic would have been lovely if we got more background or more build, but it became weak as I didn't understand them fully. Samuel was definitely the weakest link and was just the easiest riled up husband, inspector Khlid as wife and with a personality that was lost to me except that she can deduct and she smokes (heavily mentioned as an addictive habit of hers, but the barely there at all later in the story). Chapman was the only character that engaged. He was funny and interesting. I didn't understand why everbody in the story hated him. Yeah, maybe different approaches at work ethics and a little stand offish, but does that contribute to hatred? Or is that world really stiff and proper? I don't know.
Also I didn't really get his motivation. Was he a self appointed double agent or fully rebel? What did he do for the rebels. What made him tell now. Did he know he would get tortured or injected?
Either I don't have reading comprehension or I just didn't understand.
The writing also felt a little unfinished and simple, and a clunky delivery of information. The dialogue was the strength in this book, tho sometimes little cheesy but more fun to read.
Unfortunately I didn't get invested in the story and therefore gets 1 star from me. But I did bump up half a star bc the ending! For some reason it reminded of bleach and I had blast imagining the rest of the book in that way lol. 🙈
Daniel B. Greene is one of my favourite booktubers out there and even though this didn't work out for me, I will still follow his work and see where it goes. Everybody gotta start somewhere. 😊
