Update after having read Rebel's Creed: the two books should've been merged into one. If you're interested in this world/story, definitely keep reading the series, worth it.

Dark, mysterious, and heartbreaking. This short book packs a massive punch, can’t wait for the sequel to be uploaded.

This is a thrilling little book, albeit a bit too fast for its own good. The plot tends to go a bit loose at times due to the novella’s breakneck pacing but it still makes for quite an enjoyable read and a good way to set up the writer’s very well-realized and extremely grim setting.

I enjoyed this book.  The writing was good, the main character was likable, and the word it was set in was very interesting with a strong dystopian vibe. It had an Orwell’s 1984 feel to it. I like the introduction of the word. The Authors didn’t explain the word and why it is the way it is, but rather the reader is given bits and pieces from the character mentioning things, as if the reader is supposed to know/is from that world as well. The writing for this however is done in a way where it doesn’t feel like I’m picking up the second book in a series by mistake. Instead, just enough is given in order to keep you grounded in that world while you attempt to fill in the blanks as to how this world works.

Why not 5 stars?
The story is sad, and does have a lot of content that many would consider absolute no goes to read about, such as graphic descriptions of mutated  children who had been murdered and displayed. If you have issues with those sorts of things, I strongly suggest you avoid this book. I was able to tolerate it because fortunately, the crime was not described, just the aftermath. That being said, I felt the amount of time spent on describing the horrific crime scenes was a bit too much. Another reason for a decrease in stars is simply because I wanted a bit more of information on the villain of the story. I felt it left me guessing too much, and I needed a bit more context.

This is a debut, so I’m prepared to give the prose a pass, but as much as I like Daniel, I don’t like this very much. I see glimpses of things in the novella that interests me, but I’ll check reviews of the next book before I decide whether to continue or not.
