Update after having read Rebel's Creed: the two books should've been merged into one. If you're interested in this world/story, definitely keep reading the series, worth it.

I enjoyed this book.  The writing was good, the main character was likable, and the word it was set in was very interesting with a strong dystopian vibe. It had an Orwell’s 1984 feel to it. I like the introduction of the word. The Authors didn’t explain the word and why it is the way it is, but rather the reader is given bits and pieces from the character mentioning things, as if the reader is supposed to know/is from that world as well. The writing for this however is done in a way where it doesn’t feel like I’m picking up the second book in a series by mistake. Instead, just enough is given in order to keep you grounded in that world while you attempt to fill in the blanks as to how this world works.

Why not 5 stars?
The story is sad, and does have a lot of content that many would consider absolute no goes to read about, such as graphic descriptions of mutated  children who had been murdered and displayed. If you have issues with those sorts of things, I strongly suggest you avoid this book. I was able to tolerate it because fortunately, the crime was not described, just the aftermath. That being said, I felt the amount of time spent on describing the horrific crime scenes was a bit too much. Another reason for a decrease in stars is simply because I wanted a bit more of information on the villain of the story. I felt it left me guessing too much, and I needed a bit more context.

The prose is fluid and moves quickly, and the glimpse of the world Greene presents is intriguing, but the story isn't long enough to fully understand the world or connect strongly to the characters.

I am a subscriber of Daniel's channel, I mostly follow him for his Fantasy News videos, as I disagree with many of his takes when it comes to books.

I went into this book with almost no expectations. I wasn't expecting it to be a masterful piece of literature, nor was I expecting it to be terrible. What I got was something kind of bland. There was nothing in this book that I would call "groundbreaking" and it wasn't all cliches, though there were a lot of lines that were cliche.  The characters were rather bland, and had I not been told in the narrative, I couldn't guess that two of the main characters were married. They didn't talk to each other the way married people do, maybe people who are sleeping with each other, but not married. They didn't seem like a pair who respected each other. I know this is fiction, but I don't understand why a married couple would be work partners on a police force.
The plot itself, not sure what to think of it. It wasn't very clear what it was supposed to really be about. And the writing could have used a few more rounds of editing in my opinion. There was lots of clunky dialog and strange phrasing.

This didn't feel like the first book in a series, this felt like a very long prologue. There was a lot of setup and introducing characters that don't seem like they will matter later on. The world was also under-explained, I feel that almost nothing was explained.

I don't know, I borrowed this book from the library, but I just feel that this book isn't polished enough to warrant the 4$ that's being charged.

Breach of Peace is the first novella clearly meant to be usher in a new fantasy series written by none other than the Goblin--- I mean Daniel Greene. Flintlock Fantasy with a darker dash somewhere in there as well, it was a very fast - but supremely satisfying - listen on the train!

The narration by none other than Kate Reading and Michael Kramer was fantastic as well and lent these characters an unforgettable voice. The action was fast-paced, much as the rest of the book, but even within the relatively short amount of time this novella had, it delivered solidly when it came to emotional impact and hinted at bigger things when it came to worldbuilding etc in the background just enough to make me curious and eager for more, but not too much that I felt like the author was trying to cram every information available onto the pages.

Needless to say, I already pre-ordered book 2 <3
