The premise and structure of the book is really well done. The writing is beautiful, if at times going too far with the purple prose. Sometimes the writing is so focused on seeming beautiful and meaningful that it becomes disconnected from the characters. I liked the intergenerational structure and actually enjoyed the mother's section the most. But god is this book bleak. I do not understand people who said this book is hopeful or inspirational. It's just sad, and the women characters suffer the most.

I loved the use of scripts interspersed in the story telling as well as the three distinct acts in three time periods. I originally wanted to give the book 4.5 but the ending really through me for a loop
although perhaps not intentionally it was giving a strong pro-life sentiment that did not resonate well with me

This was such a strange experience because in the first third of the book, it even crossed my mind that maybe this could be a five star read for me. But it made me feel really gross at the end. The pacing was also so weird and I did not like the twists and turns it took.
This is probably not the book for you if you are any sort of vegetarian/pescetarian/vegan. There is also a part of this book that is incredibly disturbing if you are a dog lover.

Gorgeous prose that doesn't collapse under its own weight.
Excellent use of silence/blank space
I often get tired of format swapping, but this moves between narrative prose and play scenes and does it to *fantastic* effect.

Main characters encounter peril but do not perish.

Weird premise, beautifully told.

Man. If I were just rating part one, it would be an EASY 5. That was some of the most beautiful literature I've ever read. I was sobbing by the end. I can definitely understand why the format might not be everyone's cup of tea but I absolutely loved it.

Unfortunately, the book lost me in part 2. It's a lovely story, but it felt like too far a meander from the gut punch that was part one. If it were up to me, I would have had just the first part, about half of the third part, and the epilogue.

All that said, I whipped through this book like wildfire.
