I honestly don’t know what to feel about this book: sure, it was a nice read, but sometimes I felt like it was not going anywhere at all. I was quite perplexed, but later on I begin to understand that it was about the journey of woman who struggled with life and who is trying to find herself in the mist of everything.
Quite a sad novel; you can either emphasize with the protagonist or try to understand her little by little.
I liked all the views of life that were express in this book.

my favorite kawakami novel by far! this one was so emotional and beautiful. i wanted nothing but the best for fuyuko the entire time
and was absolutely devastated by the ending
. i was not expecting to like this one as much as i did because of how i felt about kawakami’s other novels. i definitely will be recommending this one!

When first getting into it, I worried that it would be overly descriptive and slow, and I did initially find it hard to reach for it/wanting to keep going.
However, I did have very high expectations but the latter half-ish really came together so well in my experience of it. I thought it was written so well and with such relatability and heart. You get to reflect on life through the life lived on the pages and the interactions (both real, imagined and the ones that were passed by).
I definitely recommend this - and there is such a thing as a right time, and both you and this book deserves that

My first Kawakami! The story reminded me a bit of Murakami: beautiful descriptions of scenes, interesting philosophical questions, and a protagonist who is very passive. It was refreshing to have a female protagonist though, and I liked the commentary on feminism presented through Fuyuko’s interactions with and about Hijiri.
Fuyuko and Hijiri initially had a bit of a romantic connection, and I would’ve loved to see that fleshed out. I was a little disturbed by the final argument between Fuyuko and Hijiri and how they became friends from that, and the age gap between Fuyuko and Matsutsuka creeped me out. I was also pleased to see Fuyuko’s growth at the end, but it felt rushed, especially with the time skip that we didn’t get to see.
