This entire book is an allegory to the question of religion: does God exist?

The author, or rather, Pi, presents how in the case where there's no evidence to prove two possible stories, is it not more hopeful and positive to belief in the one with less morbid and gruesome details, given that it does not change the way we experience existence in the first place?

In the case that we are not interested in pursuing the truth, or when the truth does not matter, yes, his view is valid and I agree. But in the case of discussing existence, I feel like knowing the nature of the universe is important for our understanding of physics and philosophy itself, to solve actual, worldly problems. It is not just a matter of the soul, because the soul is not mutually exclusive from human experience, and consequently the studies of philosophy, the physical sciences etc. Empirical data means a lot, and to present this narrative of potentially muddling the truth is rather contentious in my opinion.

Nevertheless, the adventure Pi goes on is riveting, chock full of metaphors, allegories and hidden meanings that can only be uncovered upon closer analysis, or a second read.

Read for my intro to literature class. There was some very beautiful bits of writing at times but the overall boredom and confusion I felt outweigh all of that for me personally. The animal death throughout made me feel really disgusting, which means it works quite well, but not sure why you would want to read all that.

This book describes every small thing Pi does on a day today basis in incredible detail so that if they had given me a description of everyday of that whole journey I would still be asking for more. The internal monologue of despair, hope, and determination set against the background of the desolate yet brimming with life ocean and a endearing portrayal of love for the thing that could kill you. This book stunned me. The long drawn out story contrasting with the fast emotionless telling of the ending made me stare at the ceiling for hours before I could fall asleep.

I will say make sure you read the content warnings before reading this book as it contains quite graphic descriptions.

I mean I’m glad I read it. As another reviewer said it was like an info dump, an absolute overload of information. The plot moved along slowly that I really had to force myself to read.

I like the discussion about religion and his journey with finding what pathway works for him. After a while, I felt sea sick of the drag of the story. I like how the ending has us re-evaluate the animals in the story and whether they were actually animals or "turned into" animals due to his trauma. I read the ebook along side the audiobook and enjoyed the illustrations in the book.
