My first classic since childhood, this was creative, well written and imaginative. There was a LOT of dialogue which was a bit too much at times but it was overall enjoyable.

Anne Shirley is such a loveable character and her and Manilas growth together is adorable.  Definitely a great entry way classic if you can handle the excessive amount of dialogue.

Reading this book for myself finally, after years of knowing the story vaguely, having watched the television adaptation as a child, I have to bump up my estimation of the book and give it 5 stars. This tells the story of what happens when, instead of the boy they asked for, a farmstead couple adopts receives a girl from the orphanage.

Looking at this I can see how my mother identified with Anne, and how she saw a lot of her characteristics mirrored in me as I grew up. This connection with my mother gives the book an incomparable nostalgia value. Anne is renowned for being intense, outspoken, and grandiloquent. She is so impulsive and can't keep a lid on her quirks. When she feels things, her joy is boundless, her anger explosive and then simmering, and her sorrow is pitiful and all-encompassing.

Relatable.

I feel like I am looking at my own childhood (when someone asks how you are, they don't actually want a full description!) Anne is stubborn and unwavering in her convictions, which makes her heart slow to change, constant and loyal, but also slow to forgive a slight. She is blown away by the spectacle of life around her, and if it is all too humdrum she can imagine something better, for her flights of fancy know no bounds.

Kindred spirits..

The story is well crafted, and the dialogue is excellent and at times hilarious.  hmm... yeah I'm going to give this an emotional 5.

“Dear old world, you are very lovely and I am glad to be alive in.”
A heartwarming story of family, imagination, and friendship that I will always return to. Anne once said that she is greatful to live in a world with October’s, and I am grateful to live in a world with this novel.

I wish I had liked this more! Some of Anne's bits just dragged out for so long. I loved the start and ending, but around 60% way through I felt quite bored. Maybe I thought that there would've been more adventure and less monologue. Loved the main characters so much!
I read this as an audiobook (loved the narrator).
