I have never really understood the term "Guilty Pleasure" until this series...

The Romance - The man romance age gap is atrocious and bad, as well as the fact that Rose always need to have a romantic interest is weird.
Mason was an incredibly sweet character, but Rose forcing herself to go out with someone else just to avoid Dimitri was painful to read. Mason didn't deserve to be led on, but Rose deserves to exist without the pressure to be in a relationship. Also, idk how to feel about Adrian... he is really weird around Rose and is constantly throwing himself at her. Which is not inherently bad! It's just she is 17 and he is 21, (What is with all of these freaking age gaps????), and Rose has at least somewhat showed she is uncomfortable with his romantic advances. All be it, Rose has not fully said no and Adrian is somewhat respectful, so idk how to feel quite yet...

Vampire World - But the world and class system is actually quite interesting, especially for a Young Adult book. The reality of Rose's situation is quite compelling and interesting.
The reality for all dhampir women is that they can either be a guardian or a blood wh0r3. When Rose so much as just talks to Adrian, everyone around her immediately sl*t shames her. She is not allowed to exist without scrutiny.

Rose and Lissa - This is the aspect that drew me into the series in the first place. I absolutely love female friendships and just friendships in general. I just wish we had more of them in this book!!!
The way Rose tells Lissa ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about anything she is dealing with. Rose constantly turns to Dimitri with her problems. Like girl, tell your BEST FRIEND and PERSON WHO YOU ARE BONDED TO!!! Lissa is so kind, the reason she seems so unaware of Rose's problems is because Rose doesn't communicate. I love them, why can't they just talk to each other????

Ending -
The entire finale "battle" was the best part of this book. It has been established how Christian feels about Strigoi and how he feels the societal judgement from others, as well as how this affects him. This culmination puts his character in an incredibly difficult situation, and his ability to not crack under pressure is impressive. I genuinely love his character and wish there was more of him in the series.
- AND OMG MIA!! I absolutely love what this book has done with her character. I have always hated the typical troupe of women just hating each other because of men. Her character growth and background added to this story was awesome.
- My opinion - Mason dying was an accumulation of his own reckless actions. HE DID NOT DESERVE IT THOUGH. He was trying to be a hero, but this is what happens when you run into danger without backup and against proper advice. Dimitri is right on the fact that a relationship with cloud his judgement and ability to be a proper Guardian. (There can totally be a middle ground, but Mason needs to be able to deal with his emotions some other way).
- I LOVE ROSE! Yes she is extremely reckless, constantly lashes out at other people, and makes questionable choices in terms of romance. I don't quite know how to explain, but I have come to feel protective of her. They way everyone around her is so critical of her makes me mad. I hate how her mother treats her especially. I just want to give Rose a hug.

All in all - Give me more character growth and depth, less high school drama!! I love the added context to other characters outside of Rose, but I hate the petty rivalries and WHO CARES ABOUT RALF AND JESSE????? Seriously, they are there for noooo reason. Still, I absolutely enjoyed this book.

I feel reluctant to rate it any higher with the kiss between Dimitri and Rose at the end. She's still 17, and he's still 24.

Action Packed

So much goes down in this book that there’s almost no break. You get to meet quite a few new people including another spirit user! Be prepared to cry by then end though.

Frostbite is just as bad as book one, except that instead of one paedophile there are TWO! And the second was my favourite character in the series when I was a teen. To be fair, it was slim pickings with this series. But at least I didn’t picture Mr. Tommy Wiseau when I read about Adrian Ivashkov!

Rose is insufferable for most of this book. It was hard to read, especially when the audio performer made her voice so bloody whiny.

Nothing really happens until the last two-ish hours of this (audio)book. It’s pretty boring, overall. (Except for when Adrian buys Rose countless perfumes. Seriously weird way of flirting. Like, you smell good enough to eat, but you’d be mouthwatering with a little seasoning? 🧐)

I’m going to read book three anyway because I’m putting off reading a new release that I’m sure will break my heart a bit.

I think this series is growing on me - I enjoyed book two more than book one. Maybe it was partly being more familiar with the three types of vampires, maybe it was that some of the world building was out of the way and the plot could just go.
Now to be clear I’m giving this five stars but it’s not like a new favorite book of all time that I’m planning to fan girl and reread … but it was solidly enjoyable.

I think the plot has improved from the first book. There was some character development. The bonds between characters have developed as well. I found this book to be more gripping and intense, and it kept me engaged.

My main hang up is the developing relationship between Rose and Dimitri.
