Not normally one for thrillers but I LOVED this and I love the questions it makes you ask about morality and justice. I also love this note from the author: “…I wanted to make the case that popular media aimed at young women (like Twilight), which is so routinely dismissed and denigrated, actually falls into the canon of antihero/moral outlaw narratives, which are typically afforded more prestige.”

”What is it about us teenage girls that claws so deeply under people’s skin? We’re reviled and desired in equal measure; cringed at, laughed at, then lunged at. The sheer effort people like my father and my teachers have spent trying to control us. So many dress codes and rigid rules and unspoken ones we have taken on the mantel of policing ourselves, looking in the mirror and wincing at our reflections, drawing our own blood first, before others can. I think my father wants me to erase myself the way everyone who opposed him erased themselves while he was rising to power. Perhaps he’s doing the same thing to me he did with the occult. Perhaps deep down, like with the swamp spiritualism, he recognizes I could be a threat and must be taken off the map.”

Lots of twists and turns, some predictable, some not. Ending is potentially unsatisfying

At times I found myself whispering "whaaaaat" under my breath while reading this one and, really, that kinda sums it up.

Whoever said this reads like Twilight fan fiction was correct and for that reason I had a great time.

I feel like I read a completely different book than everyone else did but this is the worst book I’ve read all year and I’ve read 100+ books this year. I have a bad habit of finishing books I don’t like, but I wish I could go back to a time before I read this book. I’ve never been so bored reading a thriller in my entire life. I would give this a proper review but just don’t waste your time.

I didn’t want this book to end!!!

Such a new way of looking at religious fundamentalism/extremism. I am always so fascinated by charismatic leaders who really could go either way in terms of being good or bad. I love Ruth and Everett and how their relationship unfolded.
