Compelling, easy to read, sometimes frustratingly 2D (the classic young narrator problem)

the back of my shampoo bottle is more entertaining than this book. Ellie ruminating over the meaning of life was the only thing I found interesting.

I read this book because I saw the movie and it is one of my favorites ever. I guess that's because it is easy to put ourselves in the situation described in the book since it all started so normally. It's really bad thinking like this, but living this story would be awesome! I would hate to be apart from my family and not knowing if they were ok or if they were even alive, it would make me sick to my stomach, but on the other hand... It would be awesome to be with friends in a place like Hell and doing what they did! I would love to blow up a bridge! That's probably why I love this story so much. It is not a realistic situation but it seems more real than something like The Hunger Games or Divergent. These guys really do have some guts. It takes courage to do what they did.

This is not a great book, but I loved it.

I really enjoyed this book. I do feel though that I would have loved this book beyond all belief if I had read it when I was in the same age group as the main characters.

The book is about a group of young teens that go away camping before they're due back at school and while they are away a war starts. It's only when they arrive home and discover the obvious signs of war that things start to sink in and they struggle to grow up to meet the challenges they face: stay and fight(and die); hide; become a guerrilla outfit. Clearly they choose the third only through their want to do something that can hopefully stem the invasion and give hope to their families in captivity.

I enjoyed the subtle nods to Australian culture, the mention of social status within Australia and the precarious situation one country could be in if others decide to invade.

I'll be reading the next one right away because the character development is great, the story line is adventurous but still character building and I've plain and simple, got to know what happens!
