Well, it would have been 5 stars, I was so delightfully surprised by how funny and open she was, and I loved all the pictures and stories. I was reading this before I went to New York and was loving every minute of it, then left and came back 2.5 months later and in reading the last little bit, somehow everything changed? There was so much fatphobia in the last 20 or so pages, which had been sprinkled throughout but really got focused on. Also the story of the stunt double’s bunion read to me as cruel instead of funny? Also the break in/rape was completely unexpected and made me cry when I read it but her unwillingness to say that Howard Stern did anything wrong bringing it up on air was really weird to me. There seemed to be an internalized misogyny or sense of something that idk. I really liked her but by the end there were so many things I couldn’t hear as funny only see how harmful I thought they were in different ways. Really odd experience reading. But she’s genuinely so funny and I enjoyed the photos and stories and stuff a lot. Oh Also at the end it didn’t feel like things were coming together for a point it just felt like bragging without objective beyond that. So weird.

Listened to the audiobook because of that "some find her voice soothing" joke from the show, and because i couldn't find the pdf (may zlib rest in peace).

And this is everything i honestly expect from a Hollywood memoir "written" by a girl from queens.

Also i love the nanny so fucking much, i might be delusional lol.

I've been wanting to read this one for quite sometime. Meanwhile, I've been in a reading slump. Couldn't get myself to read much. Then I set a couple books on my desk, ones I wanted to read and what do ya know, had a date come over and when he saw this book, I got laid. Not!! 'Fraid, I can't say this book did THAT for me; if you've read this book or read it sometime in the future, you'll understand at the beginning and at the end of the book why I included this bupkis.

And now I must kvell.

I'm interested in reading autobiographies of people I respect and Drescher is one of those people. It was fascinating hearing about how she struggled to find work when she and her husband decided that acting was their lot in life. The way she wrote it, which I have no doubts at all, schmoozing with her much be a real delight. Meaning she is the life of any party.

My eyes got really big when heard how she got to meet Barbra Streisand, I'm afraid I was plotzing. It made me want to schlep a friend of mine and go to a Streisand concert myself. I must concur with Drescher here: "She's our leader." :P

It was definitely a fascinating read and I'm glad I finally read it. Let's see here...16 years after publication. Oy, I feel old.

I must also say that she was very brave to have put someone in prison for what they did. Stopped it from occurring again, at least from that particular guy and she is also brave to have spoken about it publicly.

In closing I'll say it was nice to see some Yiddish used in print. I don't have Jewish relatives nor friends so it made certain words make more sense to me.

5 out of 5 stars.

My note:
November 5, 2012:
Page 197, 69.12% "Fran Drescher is a very brave woman to have endured the horrible event then turn around and join with others to see that the man was put in prison."

I started watching The Nanny again and looking around online, I came across the books Fran Drescher wrote so I put them on hold from our library. I didn't know what to expect from the book. I found it an easy and quick read. It was a nice look into what Fran went through when she began her acting career into the first few season of The Nanny. I really liked how she included photos, I always like seeing the history and experiences.

Fran Drescher has a…unique voice in the industry. I used to watch The Nanny sometimes and laugh at the antics of that bizarre household. When my friend loaned me this book, I was all on it.

It’s immediately clear the book holds a conversational tone and writing style that displays Fran’s humor. She comes across as a down to earth girl who made it big but struggled to get there. She wasn't gifted with the rare insta-success but had to work for years to grow. Her husband, Peter, is also in the same business and they had been together the entire book from high school on. The book opens with their childhood in a small town with her parents and how close they all were. I was surprised to learn how the parents from ‘The Nanny’ were copies of her actual parents, even down to the names.

Sometimes some of the stories would lose me, like a vacation or so, but she did have the worst luck and funny stuff about her party with the big producers. I was surprised to learn of her rape, which her husband was forced to watch, which was touched upon very briefly because of talking about Howard Stern and all her appearances on his radio show. She told an awkward but enlightening backstory about a threesome that was proposed but she didn’t go through with, and also about her awkward kiss scenes with Robin Williams. She was apparently great friends with Dan Akroyd and his wife, which came across as sweet.

I think the part most people were surprised about was her saying Princess Diana was a bitch and prima donna, but she told it like it was with her experiences.

Overall it’s a fun book. I was put off sometimes with the conversational tone that could seem cloying if it went on too long, but there were good one liners and some truly amusing stuff. The beauty tricks and her struggle and goal to lose and maintain weight was also interesting. The Nanny is of course the huge focus of the end of the book, and it was around season three when the stories stopped and the book was finished.

If you’re a big fan of Fran and the Nanny, it’s a good read that deserves your attention.

Funny and name drop-y. It was an interesting look at Fran's life, and relationship with her husband especially in light of recent events (*cough he's gay cough*). She talks about her start in show biz, the Nanny and even talks about the break-in and rape of 1985. Her hard work ethic and positive attitude were refreshing and inspiring. I got this off of a list of books Lena Dunham recommended. Reminded me of Penny Marshall's bio, but I preferred this one.
