Top.

I would like to give this book a higher rating. It was often touching and hilarious and opened up a world I know little about: the world of a small Chinese city from the time of the Cultural Revolution through today's "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics."

But I could not give it a higher rating. At the very core this was an incredibly misogynistic book. I suppose one could say that the writer, Yu Hua, is saying that life in a small Chinese city today is misogynistic, and he is merely exposing it. Perhaps this is true. But the multiple rape scenes in which the raped woman turns out to enjoy being raped very much make me question not the characters, but the very ability of the author to see the world and describe it honestly. Perhaps all this book is is a bawdy male fantasy written by an unreconstructed misogynist...who happens to portray other things, such as brotherly love and filial piety, in ways that almost make you forget who he is.

I don't know. The descriptions of village life, the humor (even some of the bawdy and crude humor), the use of the crowd speaking as one, the descriptions of city life--all these made me laugh, cry, and think, as good fiction is wont to do. But at other times I could not get past the idea that this author is just a misogynistic jerk who has merely created a character in Baldy Li who he wishes to be.

If you aren't triggered by explicit, crude humor and misogynistic acts and views, read this for the pearls and nuggets among the excrement. If you are, don't bother. There are other books.
