Ler um livro de uma história cujo filme vimos em crianças nem sempre corre como esperado. A verdade é que achei a Bridget irritante e o estilo de diário não me convenceu.

I read this for my IRL Boozy Book Club. The wine was Georgia Winery's Holiday Cheer. The wine was both tart and sweet, though a bit too sweet for my tastes.
Back to the book. I didn't like it. This book is similar to [b:Confessions of a Shopaholic|9416|Confessions of a Shopaholic (Shopaholic, #1)|Sophie Kinsella|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1546503932l/9416._SX50_.jpg|3237433] but it wasn't as light and is without the personal growth. I found Bridget to be whiny and self-absorbed. Just repulsive really as were most of the characters in this book.
Somehow, I had this expectation of an early pop culture success, feminist story but it clearly was not. I didn't even pick up on a tongue-in-cheek or satire. Just a mid 30s woman who had the self-awareness and introspection of an immature 17-year-old.
Understanding that, being male, I completely missed the point or don't understand the feelings and thoughts of women, I went to my book club (mostly women) with the goal to listen and learn. Low and behold...most felt the same way. The ones who did like the story, just liked Mr. Darcy (no, not that Mr. Darcy but also yes, that Mr. Darcy. See movie) and the romance.
So why give it one star? I liked the bond the friends had. Even though they were not great advice givers, they were there to listen to all the whining and complaining. They were there to pick up Bridget when she had all the confidence in the world yet none of the focus and ability to cook a large meal. Secondly, both Colin Firth and Hugh Grant are mentioned in the book, and they happen to play the two love interests in the movie. I found that amusing.

Whhhhhhhhhhhhhy. Why do people enjoy this? She weighs 126 lbs and thinks she's fat...Is she 4 feet tall? She sleeps with her boss. Chick lit has come a long way.

I do not get the hype. Felt very rushed at the end and also what was the need for Bridget’s mums criminal storyline??? Is that what it took to reintroduce Mark Darcy back into the plot???? Really???

My favourite movie is based off of this book and I loved it! Bridget is such a lovable protagonist. She's so witty and funny and brutally honest. Solid lighthearted low stakes romcom read.

Did not finish because my loan was due at the library LOL but also did not want to finish and got to about 70% of the book, which was around the start of the October chapter.
Thought I'd read it because it is sucha a popular and "classic" book but reading it in 2023, I felt a lot of disconnect. All Bridget cares about is losing weight and being with a guy who is bottom of the barrel pick. Complains about her life and does not do a single thing to improve it. Annoying, annoying, annoying. I'll just watch the movie and maybe hate it too.
