I really enjoyed the series.

Here is what I liked in this book:

+ the code (I loved decoding the messages :D)
+ the relationship between Ripred and Lizzie
+ character development
+ Ripred's sarcastic comments (I always love characters with sarcastic comments :D)

What could have been better:

- it would have been nice to have a list with the characters in the book

Suzanne Collins wraps up her Overlander series with a bang. This book was filled with action, but also some good character progression. I really admire the way Collins puts her characters in difficult situations and doesn't always take the easy way out. There are real and hard consequences and that feels right and true. This was a wonderful, awesome book with the great characters, plot, pacing and description.

The reason I gave this book five stars rather than my normal four is all in the resolution. Unlike too many other authors, Collins does not threaten her characters with mortal peril and then blithely snatch them from the flames in some improbable way. They are scared. They are killed. They are changed forever. The loss of Aries is harsh and heartbreaking and fits the story well. I love the fact that Collins points out how hard is must be for a child who has gone through so much to go back to normal life. How do soldiers ever integrate back into the general population after a war? Usually not that well if they've seen a lot of action and death - all of which Gregor has seen. He does not walk off into the sunset for a happy ever after, but merely steps off-stage scarred and forever changed and still a hero.

Why does this series have to end?! I want to read about Gregor forever and ever and ever. The way that this book ended has given me some anxiety about how the HG series will eventually come to a close. Oh, Suzanne Collins, how are you so brilliant? Book five was definitely spectacular, but book one was incredible and I really loved book four, too. Who am I kidding? I loved them all!!

This whole series was such a fun reread for me. I would so love if Suzanne could write more stories within this world with maybe more of a YA update. Even so, this series wrapped up perfectly.

My 9 year old loved this series. We are both sad this is the end.

Gregor's story concludes with quite a finish. I'm conflicted on how much I 'liked' the story. I need to digest it a bit, but right now I am wondering if the serious nature of the story really met my expectations in terms of perceived audience.

Who knows.

A pretty satisfying conclusion to the series.

SpoilerI quite liked that the ending was open ended - that it's not clear what Gregor ended up choosing to live. Though I can't see why he can't continue to visit if he decides to live up top (besides his mother not wanting him to go back to the Underland).

The Underland Chronicles was a lot more violent, a bit more gruesome, and a bit more tragic than I had accounted for when I first started the series. It really hammers home just how brutal life is in the Underland, and not just having the inhabitants saying it was so.

I really liked and enjoyed this series so much more than The Hunger Games.

An excellent conclusion to a fantastic series! The ending was bittersweet and left you aching, but in a good way. It was really hard to close the book and say goodbye to all of these wonderful characters. The moral of the story was put in really well; very powerfully written, but not pushy. The character and relationships development really blew me away throughout this whole series. Well done, Suzanne Collins!
