Awesome reference books for readers who are nosy enough to want to know about the genius behind some of the best literary works in history. Of course, their histories might be a bit skewed by the opinion of the author but all history books are skewed. I picked it up on clearance at HPB. Not a bad deal.

this was such a fun read! i love literary gossip. i don't agree with the positions the author takes in some places. it comes off judgmental at times but it is pithy and full of tidbits i didn't know about these authors.

3 to 5 pages per author; brief bio followed by strange facts. did you know gertrude stein supported hitler? one more reason she sucks.

If you're a literary nerd, this book is definitely for you. Beware, though, because if you already like to do research about authors like myself, there will be things in here that you already know. Having said that, there are also things that I've never heard of before. It's such a quick read where you can read one author's story, put the book down and then pick it up again later. Insightful and humorous, it reminded me that my favorite authors have flaws (some of which are BIG!), but it just made me love them even more.
Here are some of them that I didn't know about before (SPOILER ALERT!):
- Lewis Carroll was an inventor.
- During most of their childhoods both Oscar Wilde and Ernest Hemingway were dressed in girls' clothing by their mothers.
- Hemingway also wore frilly underpants.
- Kafka spent time at a nudist health spa, but he refused to take his clothes off.
- Virginia Woolf got the inspiration form his painter sister and wrote standing up toward the end of her career.
- Sylvia Plath took an IQ test in 1944, and scored a genius-level 166.
- When she was working as an editor, Toni Morrison used to send her own money to struggling writers she believed in.
- Lord Byron kept snippets of his girlfriends' pubic hair in envelopes and he had A LOT of them.
- Edgar Allan Poe went to school by the cemetery, and his teachers would make them find out how old the dead people were when they died by using the dates on their headstones.

Mi-a plăcut foarte mult această carte. Nu m-am gândit niciodată că autorii pot avea vieți atât de complicate. Mereu am crezut că scriitorii sunt persoane ”cuminți”. Până la urmă, stăteau la o masă și scriau.
Pe de altă parte, mă bucur că mi s-a confirma faptul că mulți autori sigur au fost drogați în timp ce scriau la cărțile lor. De multe ori ni s-a spus și la școală că unii autori se drogau ca să le vină inspirația, dar când am citit această carte am aflat că o făceau și din plăcere sau din motive medicale. Unii dintre ei au trăit în vremuri grele pentru omenire, deci nu sunt surprinsă că au avut tot felul de boli. Au fost și ei oameni, exact ca noi și se pare că nici viețile lor nu au fost ușoare. Un lucru care m-a uimit este faptul că aproape orice autor bărbat înșela și avea nu știu câte amante (cred că doar la F. Scott Fitzgerald nu a fost cazul, el o avea pe Zelda, iar ei mi se par ”relationship goals”, într-un mod ciudat).
Un alt lucru care mi se pare ”relatable” este faptul că scrierile lor au fost respinse de multe ori, deși în zilele noastre sunt considerate cărți importante, în ciuda controverselor pe care unele le-au stârnit (de exemplu mie îmi place ”De veghe în lanul de secară” de J. D. Salinger, e una din cele mai bune cărți pe care le-am citit). Criticii literari și editorii erau niște snobi și atunci, se pare. Nu spun că poate aveau și dreptate, uneori. Numai că de obicei criticile sunt subiective pentru că nu toți avem aceleași păreri. Dacă stau să mă gândesc cred că avem și noi nevoie de critici și editori duri pentru că în ziua de azi se publică tot felul de... minunății, ca să o spun într-un mod frumos.
Un alt lucru pe care vreau să-l fac e să citesc cărțile scrise de câțiva dintre autori. Am auzit de unele dintre ele și știu că îmi vor plăcea. Pe unele le-am citit când eram mai mică și nu mi-au plăcut (da, despre Mark Twain și ”Aventurile lui Tom Sawyer” e vorba, a fost plictisitoare pentru mine și am citit doar jumătate din ea, nici nu știu cum am reușit).
Consider că ar fi trebuit ca autorul cărții să mai adauge și alți autori pentru că mi s-a părut că i-a adăugat pe cei care sunt cei mai cunoscuți, dar eram curioasă să aflu detalii și despre alții. Poate va face un al doilea volum pentru că eu cu siguranță îl voi citi.

Pretty funny! Sometimes the text is difficult to read, though that's just a matter of design. Of course, this being the general overview that it is, don't expect any in-depth details respectfully analyzing the lives of beloved authors. It's a humorous collection meant to excite and get people talking, which it certainly does. Might be a bit difficult explaining why there's a dominatrix on the back of your book if you take it out in public, though.

This book did have a lot of interesting facts (some were negligible like authors that were actually dead, but that's understandable due to its publication year)however, I still found it to be a frustrating read. This is because most of the authors lead very similar lives, all of the drug abuse, alcoholism, and sex kind of meshes together after a certain point and then you're simply left with a SUPER AUTHOR (who embodies several questionable habits).
That being said, it's still worth reading to gloss over trivia on different authors. Be warned though, read it in small doses to avoid the side effect of summoning the SUPER AUTHOR.
