This is okay but it did come out in 2008 and definitely feels like a YA that came out in 2008. It’s a bit random and disjointed, and I didn’t love the writing style - I mean I guess it feels like how a young child would narrate something, which it is, but it’s a bit ‘this happened and then this happened’, and just generally not the kind of writing I enjoy.
But it is interesting to see this style of story with a Palestinian/Egyptian MC and not just a western setting.

I liked the writing, it was funny but also thoughtful. I liked the story, it seemed to tell an authentic story of a family that keeps having to redefine its home, and a teenager struggling with that; I think my idea of home is pretty uncomplicated and this book caused me to think about that a bit.

It made me laugh and also made me feel things.

“Don’t you ever, ever, in your life, umrik, ever, ever… ever forget us.”

I will never emotionally recover from this

This was a bit slow-moving, but I persisted and in the end, mostly liked it. My favorite parts were her descriptions of America and comparisons to Kuwait/Egypt.
