❝ Once you experience a terrible trauma and understand the world from an extreme perspective, it is difficult to overcome this perspective. Because your very survival depends on it. ❞

I was stunned reading this book; reading every chapter; every short story in this book. I read a few books that are about short story collections, and I can guarantee, this one is my favourite. In total, there are ten short stories in this book. I won’t let out every story but my favourite was the Cursed Bunny. Not because this one has a similar title to the entire book but I love how in this story, they examine a family who made or created cursed things and how they dealt with a certain one of those things. But I can ensure, that all of the short stories in this book was so intriguing to read and it has made me curious to find out more about the author, also want to read more horror story like this book. Besides, this book has everything; magical realism, horror, and sci-fi. I am not tired and bored through this book. Plus, each story has its own feels. I mean, they lean to be on the creepier side in every shorty. Oh, I just want to say— shut up and read Cursed Bunny!!

This was an interesting short story collection to read, with the reader drifting from one unsettling story to the next, never quite knowing what's around the corner. Perhaps what made the horror of these stories come alive as well as they did—even if fantastical—was the everyday nature of them. The horror isn't the eerie or supernatural; it's the people around you and what they're capable of doing to others for their own benefit.

Chung explores different styles and genres in this collection; I found this interesting, but it also added to the density of this collection. I have given him praise before, but I have to give it again: Anton Hur did a phenomenal job handling these changes with his translation.

While I didn't think all the stories were particularly memorable, the ones that really stick with you, well, will stick.

Weird, uncomfortable stories - in the best kind of way. Relied maybe a little too much on a twist sort of format (which were sort of easy to guess and that took away a little of the startling surprise I think the author was going for). Apart from that though, incisive examination of themes like motherhood, responsibility, and exploitation. Highly recommend if you are okay with gore in your stories.

all of the stories, by order of liked to least liked:
  1.  Scars - who is the monster and who is the man remix with the ones who walk away from omelas
  2.  Ruler of the winds and sands - a cautionary tale of love and greed
  3.  The Head - an insane allegory for aging and motherhood
  4.  Snare - karmic justice in the form of cyclic suffering
  5.  Cursed Bunny - eat the rich cathartic revenge
  6.  Home Sweet Home - a haunting not quite what you'd expect
  7.  The Embodiment - pregnancy a la Diary of a Void, escalates quickly and wildly
  8.  Reunion - two seemingly inconspicuous people form a strange bond that rekindles after years of separation
  9.  Goodbye, My Love - AI gains sentience, and holy cow
  10.  Frozen Finger - an eerie story of a tragic accident and memory loss
