Received as part of First Reads giveaway. Was pleasantly surprised by this book. Excruciatingly researched, but not dry or overstocked with detail. Good mystery, interesting main character.

I found this book missing something but maybe it was the timing of the read. The characters were okay but I didn't feel emotionally invested in them. I was a bit uncomfortable with the level of detective work set in Arthurian times - it seemed out of place and I had to keep reminding myself it was medieval.

A detective murder mystery but set in a medieval fort as Arthur works to become king- no real complaints, but it was also nothing special & I don’t really feel like continuing the series.

Tony Hays was on a panel at Indy Bouchercon. When he discussed his main the more intriqued I became. The book did not disappoint and I have now have the second book sitting on my shelf.

In a different mood, I would have enjoyed this book. As is, with not a lot of brain power to bring to my reading, I found the heavily researched vocabulary to be overwhelming. Descriptions of forts and footwear bogged me down by the second chapter.

This one really didn't work for me, from the faux archaisms in the prose to the flat characters and muddled mystery.
