I found this one pretty satisfying even though everything I was guessing in my head was entirely wrong. Maybe I thought this was so good because it didn't have Hastings in it.

I really liked Katherine in this one except for the fact that Derek was like: yep, I'm a gambler, probably always will be, tend to treat women horribly, and already said I would turn over a new leaf and didn't, but super not a murderer - just a suspected one! - so.... let's get married! And for her to be like: Well, no red flags here, let's do it! What? Girl, you are so much smarter than that in every other respect so wth?

Once again, I missed Hastings, I love when Poirot has him to play off of! The mystery was good, of course, and kept me guessing but I know it's not going to be one of the ones that sticks out as I make my way through these.

I enjoyed this book... but. But I wanted more of the action to take place on the titular train. But I thought the cast of characters was bigger than I prefer in a Poirot story. But I greatly disliked a handful of the characters that I think we may have been supposed to sympathize with. Still, it was more enjoyable than not. (And there was no Hastings in this one. *whew*)

I liked Miss Grey a lot, and had hoped for a while there that she would turn into the "new Hastings" but after this one I suspect that she will end up with a much calmer life than the events of the mystery story. I did find it very amusing though that she and Poirot met when he was commenting on her choice of reading a detective novel, and she said that "these things don't happen in real life" just before, of course, they did happen. While I did figure out part of the whodunnit, I must admit that it wasn't me being clever... more like me thinking "what about this person? I bet they were involved" and then being right.
