A meditation on fucking, well I knew I had signed up for erotica but I wasn’t expecting it be this explicit. I was so excited to have a book on my course set in the midlands, but I couldn’t help but skim read the chapters it was so medical and disgusting. Maybe just not my taste. But there were some really beautiful moments of hope on the decaying world. Lawrence’s own illness and disability is felt throughout as his characters go on top happily ever after yet he cannot. It’s a beautiful touching book, just needs a bit less actual touching.

A re-read outside the classroom for a book club. Look, certainly parts of the text should be and are criticized. But I marveled still about the questions Lawrence puts to his readers about self, partnership, class, and more.

<Also, it is a profoundly unique experience to read a romance book in which the leads are not very likable.>
