I loved the first book, but this one fell flat for me. The main plot twist was predictable. Emotions were talked about but were not felt. A lot of the book focused on the political maneuvering rather than on actual events. I liked the ending, but that's about it.

I had so many issues with this book. At times it seemed I would never finish reading it.
Somewhere at the half of it - like 200 pages in! - plot twist happened and I was suddenly very much interested in reading to the end!
I am very aware of how difficult this book was for me to read:
years have passed since I read the first book
the science fiction aspect is not something I usually go for
the abundance of cultural and language details the author has created for different planets and people required more concentration from me than I was willing to invest
my ability to imagine colorful and alien planets and scenery has been tested and found lacking yet again

All that said I loved the drama and the heavy tragic content. The characters were at times heartbreaking and I loved them for it. There was just enough mystery to most of the characters that they each could hold a book of their own story.

I honestly couldn't tell you what happened because I was bored throughout the entire thing.

I didn't like this as much as Carve the Mark (which was a five star read for me) but I thought this was a pretty good ending to the duology! I loved Yma and Teka a lot in this book, and enjoyed the conclusion for both Cyra and Akos. I'm super glad I discovered this series and all the awesome characters Veronica Roth created in it.

This duet is everything. I love the characters, I love the tension between the different societies, and I love the way each group is given the space to fight for the their beliefs, even though it may be at odds with the main characters.
