Gorgeous illustrations but not enough of a story.

Very cute book! I liked the story - it had some nice adventure, and a good moral without being moralistic. Parents would enjoy this, and kids will like the animals. The illustrations are great!

A fox is looking for meaning in life and more than just food. He decides to go on a journey and he gets on the Antlered ship when they ask for a crew. It’s hard going at times, but friendships form and questions are asked and meals are shared. They see some amazing things.

This was a great book about how community and friendship happens and the need to see new things in life. I loved the look of the ship and it’s what got me wanting to read this. The artwork is fantastic and the story is a great adventure story.

The nephew loved all the animals and the fox. He loved the adventure and the pirates they ran into. He thought this was a pretty good book. It could have been funnier for him, but he like it and he gave this 4 stars. He would not like the big storms in a boat. He thinks there are better ways to explore.

It starts with a map on the end papers; ever since a friend of mine said that he always seems to like books with maps, it seems to be something I really like as well. I waited months to get this book from the public library after reading so many positive reviews and seeing it on potential award lists.

As soon as I saw the fox on the rock on the very first page, I understood why this book has been on mock Caldecott lists. I found it very interesting that the illustrations were done in graphic and ball point pen before digital coloring. How often do you see ball point pen listed as a picture book medium? The spread with the "pirates" is absolutely breath-taking. (and then I understand "why an antlered ship?")

I did like the ending, with the animals asking and answering. Still, I think children might be a little confused by the basic premise of how these animals ended up together on a ship, which would lead to questions... just like in the book.

Maybe the real answers to the questions we ask were the friends we made along the way?

Points for friendship and beautiful illustrations (loved the gang of pigeons with handkerchiefs) but lost points for NOT ACTUALLY ANSWERING QUESTIONS.

Gorgeous illustrations, I can see this one landing on many Mock Caldecott lists. A book that shows characters who are on the road, I mean ship, to self-discovery.

I would have read this book ragged as a child, mostly because of the illustrations.
